Jesse Bowman Bruchac is a Nulhegan Abenaki Citizen affiliated with Middlebury College's Sunderland Language Center as a Lecturer. He co-directs the family-run education center Ndakinna, where he teaches Native American Life Ways, Martial Arts, and the Abenaki language. Bruchac has lectured at prestigious institutions like Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Princeton, and currently co-teaches Wabanaki Language courses at the University of Southern Maine.
His work focuses on Abenaki language preservation, traditional storytelling, and cultural education. As a musician, he has released multiple albums featuring Abenaki songs and flute music, with notable performances at Woodstock ’94 and alongside acts like The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan.
Bruchac has been recognized for his storytelling, winning the Best Storyteller Competition at Indian Summer in Milwaukee (1995). He studied the Abenaki language under Cecile Wawanolette and continues learning with Joseph Elie Joubert, contributing to language revitalization efforts through publications, recordings, and collaborations with media organizations like AMC, National Geographic, and PBS.
