Jesse Bakke is an Associate Professor in the Foundational Sciences Department at Central Michigan University's College of Medicine. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biology with a biotechnology emphasis from the University of California Davis, postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and a baccalaureate from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa.
Dr. Bakke leads team-based learning in biochemistry, cell biology, oncology, and nutrition while directing preclinical courses. His research laboratory focuses on:
- Identifying novel cancer therapeutic targets using CRISPR/siRNA screens
- Investigating cellular signaling pathways in oncology
- Developing gene-editing technologies for neurological disorders
- Exploring metabolic interventions like intermittent fasting
His recent publications (2019-2025) demonstrate strong focus areas: 40% explore CRISPR/siRNA applications in oncology, 30% examine metabolic regulation in diabetes/obesity, 20% investigate nanoparticle-based gene delivery, and 10% address neurodegenerative therapies. The work consistently integrates molecular biology techniques with translational medical applications.
Honors include:
- Nutritional biology Graduate Student Fellowship
- NIH Biotechnology Training Fellowship
- UCD Humanities Graduate Research Award
- Peter J. Shields & Henry A. Jastro Research Award
Dr. Bakke maintains memberships in the American Heart Association, American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and Association of Biochemistry Educators. His lab conducts phenotypic screens to identify oncogenic therapeutic targets while developing novel gene-editing delivery systems.
