Jess Vogt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Studies at DePaul University's College of Science and Health. As a full-time faculty member, she leads the LUFA (Lab for Urban Forestry in the Anthropocene), conducting transdisciplinary research at the intersection of urban ecology and sustainability science.
Her research focuses on:
- Urban forestry and social-ecological systems (SES) in the Anthropocene
- Urban tree growth, survival, and maintenance dynamics
- Sustainable community development through urban greening
- Climate resilience via carbon storage, stormwater management, and heat island mitigation
Vogt's applied work emphasizes community collaboration with nonprofits, municipalities, and grassroots groups to improve urban forest stewardship. Key projects include CommuniTree, TreeKeepers Motivations, and Urban Forests as Social-Ecological Systems.
Professional recognition includes her appointment as a Future Earth Fellow.
She teaches core courses such as ENV 261 (Mixed Methods in Environmental Studies), ENV 341 (Urban Forests as Social Ecological Systems), and ENV 506 (Sustainability Science), integrating fieldwork with community-based research. Her LUFA lab trains students in urban forestry practices while addressing real-world sustainability challenges.
