Jerry Coakley is Professor of Finance at Essex Business School, University of Essex. He joined the university in February 2001 and served as Head of the Finance Group (2001–2010). He founded the Essex Finance Centre (EFiC) and directed it until 2014. His qualifications include an MSc (Econ) and PhD.
His research explores three primary domains: Fintech (equity crowdfunding, ICOs), Behavioural Finance (prospect theory, investor sentiment), and Corporate Finance (IPOs, London AIM). His work examines novel funding mechanisms for startups, psychological drivers of market behavior, and capital-raising strategies in evolving financial landscapes.
Analysis of his recent publications (2019–2025) reveals a dominant focus on Fintech innovations, particularly equity crowdfunding dynamics, platform strategies, and regulatory impacts. Behavioral finance themes include market anomalies and investor psychology, while corporate finance research addresses capital structure and crisis responses. Methodologies blend empirical analysis, econometric modeling, and cross-disciplinary review.
He has secured research grants including:
- Equity, venture capital and business angel investment in Essex (Let's Do Business Group, 2019)
- Smart Data Analytics for Business and Local Government (Economic & Social Research Council, 2014)
Professor Coakley has supervised over 40 PhD students to completion and currently advises two doctoral candidates. He leads research initiatives through EFiC and contributes to Essex Business School’s finance pedagogy, including the course Behavioural Finance (BE335).
