Jerome C. Mertz is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, with joint appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and affiliations in the Neurophotonics Center, Photonics Center, and Center for Systems Neuroscience. He holds a PhD in Physics from Université Paris VI and UC Santa Barbara, and a B.A. in Physics from Princeton University. His primary research focuses on developing novel optical microscopy techniques for biological imaging, particularly in neuroimaging and deep tissue visualization.
His work includes advancements in confocal microscopy, multiphoton imaging, and speckle-based techniques to enhance resolution and sensitivity in complex biological systems. He leads the Biomicroscopy Lab, pioneering innovations like the Targeted Illumination Confocal (TICO) microscopy for in vivo voltage imaging. Mertz has been recognized with the 2025 Dean’s Catalyst Award for bold research initiatives. His contributions span optical engineering, neuroimaging, and biomedical instrumentation, with a focus on translating optical technologies to clinical and neuroscience applications.
Additional affiliations include primary faculty roles in Photonics & Optical Systems and Neuroscience & Neuroengineering at BU. His research integrates physics-based approaches with biological systems to address challenges in imaging at cellular and tissue scales.
