Prodnik completed his undergraduate studies in theoretical-analytical political science at the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2008, and defended his doctoral dissertation titled "Political Economy of Communication and Structural Transformations of Capitalism" (communication studies) in 2013. In 2015, he was appointed as an assistant professor in the field of communication studies, and renewed his position in 2020. He has also been involved with the international research center Centre for the study of Democracy, Signification and Resistance – Desire since 2015.
His principal research interests encompass critique of political economy and historical transformations of capitalist societies with an emphasis on journalism, media, and social communication. He bases his research in various strands of critical theory, especially political economy of communication, which provides him with a generalist perspective on a variety of research topics. These include historical processes influencing development of journalism; structural changes in political communication and the public sphere; or the wider social context of technological changes and democratic potentials brought about by new ICTs. His work critically examines commodification processes, mediatisation, and the relationship between media and politics.
Analysis of Prodnik's recent publications reveals consistent engagement with critical media theory, particularly focusing on the political economy of communication. His work examines how media and communication systems interact with capitalist structures, with particular attention to processes of commodification, mediatisation, and the changing nature of journalism. He frequently employs historical and critical perspectives to analyze contemporary media phenomena, often drawing connections between historical developments and current challenges in media systems. His research spans both theoretical contributions and empirical studies, particularly focused on Slovenian and European contexts.
