Jerg Seipel is an Adjunct Lecturer in Humanitarian Logistics at the University of Sydney and teaches logistics and supply chain management at Massey University in New Zealand. He is also a member of an Auckland-based consulting agency. His career combines academic work with extensive field experience in humanitarian logistics and disaster response.
Education: Holds an M.A. from the University of Frankfurt (1998), with a thesis on cargo cults in western New Guinea. Earlier studies included cultural anthropology, international political science, and sociology at the University of Heidelberg’s Centre for Southeast-Asian Studies, where he conducted museum-based research and fieldwork in Cape Verde.
Research Interests: Focuses on humanitarian logistics, global supply chains, disaster response strategies, and air transport systems. His work emphasizes practical applications in conflict zones and post-disaster environments.
Professional Experience: Served eight years with Médecins Sans Frontières and the Red Cross, managing logistics in war zones (South Sudan, Congo, Burundi, Cambodia, Indonesia, Afghanistan) and leading reconstruction projects. Notable roles include logistics delegate during the 2004 Tsunami recovery in Sumatra and head of mission in Phnom Penh and Kabul.
Consulting and Industry: Post-2007, worked as an operations manager for a multinational company before transitioning to academia. Active in New Zealand’s logistics sector through consulting.
