Jeremy Rowland is a faculty member at VanderCook College of Music with a Master of Music Education (MMEd) from Northwestern University and a Master of Science (MS) from the University of St. Francis. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Education at Northwestern University, focusing on quality teacher assessment, popular music pedagogy, and music as an intervention for enculturation. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Music Education (BMEd) from VanderCook College of Music.

Rowland’s research interests prioritize equity in music teaching and learning, popular music pedagogy, and cultural competency in education. His community-based work includes developing a General Music curriculum for The People’s Music School, which targets K-5 students in Uptown and Albany Park neighborhoods and has impacted 780 students. He also managed the transition to online instruction for 12 music educators.
He has presented on ethnographic approaches to the music of the West African Diaspora at the 2022 Society of Ethnomusicology Joint Annual Conference and student-centered Rap & Hip-Hop instruction strategies at the 2023 Illinois Music Educators Conference. As a National Board mentor for the Chicago Teachers Union Foundation, he has guided eight high school educators to certification.
