Jeremy Michalek is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. He directs the Design Decisions Laboratory and co-directs the Vehicle Electrification Group. His research focuses on vehicle electrification, including technology, life cycle assessment, consumer behavior, and public policy, as well as design decision-making involving systems optimization and green design.
Michalek holds a B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University (1999), and M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2001 and 2005). He has authored influential studies on electric vehicle adoption, supply chain vulnerabilities, and policy impacts. His work has been featured in outlets like the New York Times and WIRED.
Key affiliations include the Center for Climate and Energy Decision Making and the Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation. He has received prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award and ASME’s Outstanding Young Investigator Award, and serves on committees for ASME, INFORMS, and the Transportation Research Board.
His research spans interdisciplinary topics like EV battery costs, ride-hailing equity, and sustainable urban logistics. Recent studies address supply chain risks, policy implications of federal EV mandates, and the environmental impacts of electrification under varying grid mixes.
