Jeremy C. Stein is the Moise Y. Safra Professor of Economics at Harvard University, specializing in financial economics. He holds academic affiliations with the Harvard Department of Economics and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). His research spans behavioral finance, corporate finance, monetary policy, and financial regulation. Stein has served as a co-editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics and Journal of Economic Perspectives, and led the American Finance Association as its 2008 president. He has advised the U.S. Treasury and National Economic Council during the Obama administration, focusing on crisis management and regulatory reform. His work addresses systemic financial risks, banking practices, and the interplay between monetary policy and market sentiment.
Stein earned an AB in economics (summa cum laude) from Princeton University (1983) and a PhD in economics from MIT (1986). Before joining Harvard in 2000, he was on the finance faculty at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Harvard Business School. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and contributes to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Financial Advisory Roundtable.
