Jeremy D. Brown is the John C. Malone Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, part of the Whiting School of Engineering. His research focuses on the intersection of robotics, biomechatronics, and medicine, particularly in haptic feedback systems for prosthetics, surgical robotics, and rehabilitation. He leads the Haptics and Medical Robotics (HAMR) lab, exploring human perception of touch and its application to human-robot collaboration.
Brown holds degrees from Morehouse College (B.S. in Applied Physics), the University of Michigan (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering), and completed postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania. His accolades include the NSF CAREER Award, Sloan Fellowship, and multiple IEEE recognitions. He is a senior member of IEEE and active in ASME and NSBE.
His research bridges engineering and medicine, with applications in prosthetic design, surgical robotics, and rehabilitation. Notable projects include developing wearable haptic interfaces and soft robotic tools for minimally invasive interventions. His work has been featured in Forbes, New York Times, and Science News.
Awards include the
- IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Haptics Early Career Award
- NSF CAREER Award
- Sloan Foundation Fellowship
His lab's innovations address gaps in user-centered prosthetic design and teleoperation systems, emphasizing clinical translation. Current projects explore affective touch in robotics and neurophysiological feedback mechanisms.
