Professor Jens-Christian Meiners is a faculty member in the Department of Physics at the University of Michigan, specializing in experimental biophysics and condensed matter physics. His research focuses on understanding the dynamics of DNA molecules and their interactions with proteins using advanced optical techniques like femtonewton force spectroscopy and optical tweezers. He investigates how DNA topology influences biological functions, including gene regulation and transcriptional processes. Recently, his work extends to studying spinal cord tissue mechanics in decompression sickness. Professor Meiners holds a Ph.D. from the University of Konstanz (1997) and an M.S. from the University of Delaware (1994). He is an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow and has led projects supported by grants such as the Leinweber Foundation's $8M award. His lab combines microfluidics with optical methods to explore DNA-protein interactions and has published widely in journals like Physical Review Letters and Biophysical Journal. Key areas of exploration include entropic forces in DNA looping, RNA compaction, and the mechanical basis of genetic functions.
