Jens Ahrens is a Professor and head of the Audio Technology Group at Chalmers University of Technology's Division of Applied Acoustics since 2016. His research focuses on spatial audio signal processing, psychoacoustics, and microphone array technologies. He holds a Diplom (M.Sc.) from Graz University of Technology and a Dr.-Ing. from TU Berlin. Prior roles include postdoctoral work at Microsoft Research, visiting professorships at Stanford University, TU Erlangen, and the University of Huddersfield, and leadership in academic and industry collaborations.
He has contributed to projects like the SoundScape Renderer and the Digital Twin Cities Centre. His work bridges theoretical advancements in acoustics with practical applications such as binaural rendering and acoustic levitation. He serves on editorial boards for leading journals and advises institutions like KFB Acoustics and Brewhouse Inkubator. Teaching includes courses on audio technology, spatial audio, and signal processing, with a focus on interdisciplinary education through MOOCs and international collaborations.
Research interests span spatial audio capture/processing, room acoustics modeling, and perceptual evaluation of audio systems. His lab develops tools like the Real-Time Spherical Array Renderer (ReTiSAR) and explores AI-driven approaches for music representation and acoustic simulations.
