- University: University of California, Irvine
- School: School of Physical Sciences
- Department: Department of Chemistry
- Academic Rank: Professor
Her research centers on inorganic synthetic, mechanistic, and thermodynamic studies of catalysts for carbon-neutral fuel production. She is particularly interested in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, hydrogen evolution, and bioinspired systems that mimic enzymatic efficiency. Her group explores the role of secondary interactions, electric fields, and proton-coupled electron transfer in catalysis.
The recent publications from her lab reflect a strong trend in electrochemical CO2 capture and conversion, interfacial catalysis, and the design of molecular systems for solar-to-fuels applications. These works span high-impact journals such as JACS, ACS Catalysis, and Chemical Reviews, indicating a broad and influential research portfolio in sustainable chemistry.
Scientific awards and recognitions include:
- 2021 Inorganic Chemistry Lectureship Award
- NSF CAREER Award
- DOE Early Career Research Award
- Sloan Research Fellowship
- Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award
- Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research
- PECASE
Professor Yang has advised numerous PhD and undergraduate students, many of whom have received prestigious fellowships such as the NSF GRFP and UC Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship. She leads the DOE-funded Center for Closing the Carbon Cycle (4C), a major Energy Frontier Research Center, and has secured significant grants from the Sloan Foundation and NSF. Her lab emphasizes mentorship, collaboration, and innovation in both research and teaching.
The Yang Lab operates within the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB) at UCI, fostering collaboration across disciplines. The group holds annual retreats and maintains active outreach, teaching, and safety initiatives. Professor Yang also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Chemical Society, highlighting her leadership in the chemical sciences community.
