Dr Jenny Amos is a Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Suffolk, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Her research focuses on socio-phonology, dialect variation, and applied phonology, with a particular interest in Mersea Island English and international dialects. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Essex, alongside MA and BA degrees in Sociolinguistics and English Language and Linguistics from the same institution.
Her teaching expertise spans theoretical and laboratory phonology, language variation, conversational structure, and language acquisition. Dr Amos has presented at major conferences including the New Ways of Analysing Variation and the Linguistics Association of Great Britain. She serves as Meetings Secretary for the Linguistics Association of Great Britain (since 2021) and is an Associate of the Higher Education Academy (since 2009).
Her research projects include studies on emoji construction, inclusivity in orthography, and the phonological analysis of dialectal variation. Key publications include work on diphthong variation in Mersea Island English and re-evaluations of T/D deletion in English. She has organized conferences and contributed to special editions of English Today focusing on South of England dialects.
