Jennifer Vanos is an Associate Professor at Arizona State University's School of Sustainability and College of Global Futures. She holds additional affiliations with the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience, Urban Climate Research Center, and Global Futures Laboratory.
- PhD in Environmental Sciences (2012), University of Guelph
- Postdoctoral Fellow (2012-2013), Health Canada
Research Focus: Dr. Vanos specializes in human biometeorology, examining interactions between climate extremes (particularly heat and air pollution) and health outcomes across vulnerable populations. Her work spans urban microclimate modeling, heat exposure assessment, and climate adaptation strategies, with particular emphasis on school environments, athletic settings, and homelessness.
Key Contributions: She leads the Human Biometeorology Lab at ASU and serves as Chair of the American Meteorological Society’s Board on Environment & Health. Her research has informed World Health Organization heat health guidelines.
- Climate and Health Champion (2019)
- NSF CAREER grant recipient (2021)
- Co-PI, NSF Global Centers Track 2 Heat Adaptation (2024)
- Co-PI, LEAP-HI Individual Heat Risk Assessment (2022)
Recent Publications: 2025 articles examine advanced heat exposure sensing, playground design impacts, and urban heat mitigation through irrigation and pavement modifications. Earlier work (2024-2012) covers heat stress classification, playground UV protection, and physiological heat modeling.
