Dr. Jennifer Travis is a Professor and Chairperson of the English Department at St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. John's University. Specializing in U.S. Literature and Culture, Gender Studies, Trauma and Vulnerability Studies, and Digital Pedagogy, she holds a Ph.D. in English from Brandeis University, an M.A. in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Brandeis, and a B.A. from Vassar College.
Her research focuses on intersections between literature, law, and gender, with notable works including Gender and American Literature (2022), Danger and Vulnerability in Nineteenth-Century American Literature (2018), and Wounded Hearts: Masculinity, Law, and Literature in American Culture (2005). She actively incorporates digital humanities tools into pedagogy, as seen in her co-edited volume Teaching with Digital Humanities (2018).
Dr. Travis has received prestigious awards including the McNair Scholars Program Mentor of the Year and Legacy Award from the Society for Multicultural Affairs. Her grants include support from the Newberry Library and Huntington Library. She teaches innovative courses like American Women Writers and Wikipedia and Digitizing Literary Studies.
Her publications span trauma narratives, legal fictions, and pedagogical innovation, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and equity in education. She maintains a leadership role in advancing digital humanities and gender studies within academia.
