Jennifer Rampling

Jennifer Rampling serves as Assistant Professor of History at Princeton University, where she teaches in the Program in History of Science. Her academic foundation includes a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) from Cambridge University (2010) and a Wellcome Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.

Her research centers on the history of late medieval and early modern science and medicine, with specialized focus on alchemical practices in England between 1300–1700. She examines the interplay between alchemical theory and material culture, particularly through the lens of historical imagery and experimental reconstruction. Recent work investigates how alchemical knowledge was transmitted through visual media and textual traditions during this period.

Rampling previously served as Editor of Ambix (2013–2017), the premier journal for alchemy and chemistry history. She co-leads the digital humanities project "The Winthrop Family on the Page" with Anthony Grafton, analyzing Colonial American intellectual culture through five generations of book annotations. Her current research at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) develops a book on alchemical imagery informed by experimental reconstructions of early modern techniques.

Her scholarly activities demonstrate strong engagement with digital methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches to historical scientific practice, bridging history of science, material culture studies, and visual analysis.
