Her research centers on transformative approaches to teacher education, with particular focus on critical pedagogy, citizenship education, and social justice. She investigates how educators can address cultural inequities, leverage multilingual texts through translanguaging pedagogy, and implement social action projects in classrooms. Her scholarship examines the intersection of privilege, bias, and racism in educational settings, with emphasis on creating transformative learning experiences that prepare teachers to serve diverse student populations effectively.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory focused on preparing educators as agents of change. Her work evolved from foundational research on educational technology in social studies to more recent explorations of privilege in college classrooms and critical translanguaging pedagogy. A unifying theme across her scholarship is the 'butterfly effect' concept—how small educational interventions can create significant societal impacts through empowered, socially conscious educators.
Dr. Ponder actively mentors doctoral students, serving as committee chair for Malysa O Chandler and Jessica Claborn. Her teaching portfolio spans dissertation supervision, field work experiences, and content-specific methods courses, demonstrating comprehensive engagement with teacher preparation at multiple levels. She regularly teaches courses addressing science education, social studies, children's literature, and expressive arts for early childhood and elementary educators.
