Dr. Jennifer Midberry is an Associate Professor in the Journalism Department at Temple University’s Lew Klein College of Media and Communication. Her research focuses on enhancing journalism ethics through visual communication and reporting on marginalized groups, particularly in the context of gun violence and social issues. As a former photojournalist and photo editor, her work bridges practical insights with theoretical advancements in media representation.
Her research explores two primary areas:
- Visual communication in news, emphasizing ethical photography and audience empathy
- Comprehensive analysis of gun violence reporting in Philadelphia
Selected recent publications examine solutions journalism, refugee resettlement portrayal, and systemic disparities in firearm violence coverage. Her work has appeared in journals like Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, PLoS One, and Feminist Media Studies.
Midberry mentors students through collaborative research projects, with notable student co-authors including Z. Vaughn, R.N. Comfort, and J.E. Roskos. She teaches undergraduate courses in Visual Communication and Photojournalism, alongside graduate-level Digital Qualitative Research Methods.
Prior to academia, Midberry worked as a visual journalist for The Philadelphia Daily News, Associated Press, AOL News, and ABC News, bringing practical expertise to her scholarly work.
