Dr. Jennifer Melvin is a Lecturer in the Department of International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She holds an MA in Human Rights from the University of Essex and a PhD in Sociology from the School of Advanced Study, University of London. Her research focuses on UK aid policy, Rwanda’s post-genocide reconciliation efforts, Commonwealth relations, and human rights activism. Dr. Melvin’s work examines how states navigate socio-economic challenges post-conflict, particularly in Rwanda, and explores the intersection of development, security, and climate interests in UK foreign policy.
Her notable publications include the book Reconciling Rwanda: Unity, Nationality and State Control (2020), which analyzes post-genocide governance, and recent articles on UK Aid for Trade strategies post-Brexit. She also investigates remittance flows from African diasporas and their role in sustainable development. Current research critically examines UK aid policies, climate diplomacy, and security interests in Commonwealth African nations.
Dr. Melvin has taught courses on human rights advocacy and pedagogy, with a forthcoming co-authored chapter on teaching human rights challenges. Her approach bridges academic rigor with practical activism, emphasizing ethical engagement in development contexts.
