Dr. Jennifer McIlwain is an Associate Professor in the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on coral reef systems across the Arabian Sea, Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, and west Pacific regions, emphasizing Reef Fish Population Dynamics. Key areas include larval replenishment, population connectivity, acoustic telemetry, and Marine Protected Area efficacy. She employs interdisciplinary methods like genetics, demography, and population modeling to address fisheries challenges. Mentoring students and fostering global perspectives on tropical marine ecosystems are central to her work.
Her research spans over a decade, addressing climate change impacts, deforestation effects on marine systems, and ENSO-driven hydroclimate patterns. Notable contributions include studies on coral geochemistry, microplastic detection protocols, and sustainable aquaculture practices. Dr. McIlwain’s work bridges ecological science with conservation strategies, particularly in mitigating coastal development impacts and improving fisheries management.
Publications highlight her expertise in coral resilience, genetic connectivity of fish populations, and the socioeconomic role of marine tourism. Her findings underscore the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to safeguarding tropical marine biodiversity under anthropogenic pressures.
