Jennifer D. Keene is a Professor of History and Chair of the History Department at Chapman University, where she also serves as Dean of the Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from The George Washington University.

Keene specializes in American military experience during World War I, with a particular focus on African American soldiers and the dual struggle for democracy abroad and at home. Her research explores the intersection of military service, civil rights activism, and racial dynamics during the war and its aftermath. She has authored three monographs on the subject and co-edited New Directions in First World War Studies.
Her scholarly work spans military history, social history, civil rights movements, and cultural memory of WWI. Notable projects include the peer-reviewed "1914-1918-online" encyclopedia (as General Editor) and curating the "To Arms: The Western Front, 1914-1918" museum exhibit at Chapman University.

She is currently preparing synthesis works for the WWI centennial and a contracted book on African American soldiers for Oxford University Press.
