Professor Jennifer Hughes is a leading academic in Drama at The University of Manchester's School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. She holds editorial roles at RIDE Journal and Contemporary Theatre Review, and advises Common Wealth Theatre. Her work bridges theory and practice, focusing on theatre's role in addressing poverty, economic justice, and activism.
Her research includes the AHRC-funded 'Civic Theatres: A Place for Towns' project (2021-2022) and the earlier 'Poor Theatres' fellowship (2014-2016), which produced a landmark database on theatre and economic justice. She co-authored Performance in Place of War (2009) and edited Critical Perspectives in Applied Theatre (2016).
Research interests span activist theatre, applied theatre methodologies, and the historical intersections of theatre with welfare systems. She advises PhD students exploring theatre's role in contexts of precarity and political protest.
Key projects include the 'Creative Towns' initiative examining theatres' civic roles amid austerity, and collaborations with organizations like the Wellcome Trust and National Association of Youth Theatres. Her work aligns with UN SDGs on poverty reduction and sustainable communities.
