Professor Jennifer Hastie is the Director of the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde. Her research focuses on optically-pumped semiconductor and solid-state lasers, particularly narrow linewidth lasers for quantum technologies, metrology, and spectroscopy. She leads the UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensing and Timing and co-leads the £5M Photonics & Quantum Accelerator (PQA). She holds IEEE Senior Membership and became an Optica Fellow (2023) for her contributions to narrow-linewidth lasers.
Education: PhD and BSc in Physics from the University of Strathclyde (2004 and 2000).
Research interests include ultra-narrow linewidth lasers for optical clocks, Raman lasers, and VECSEL innovations. Key projects involve Phase III of the National Hub for Quantum Enabled Position, Navigation, and Timing (EP/Z533178/1), and the PQA collaboration with Scottish universities and industry.
Notable achievements include EPSRC Challenging Engineering Award (2011), Optica Fellowship (2023), and contributions to diamond Raman lasers and frequency stabilization techniques. Her work bridges quantum technology with industrial photonics growth in Scotland.
