Jennifer Grygiel is an Associate Professor of Communications (Social Media) at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. They hold a bachelor’s degree in Art and Education from St. Lawrence University and a graduate degree in Management (Finance/Control) from Harvard Extension School. Their research focuses on social media ethics, state media, disinformation, and LGBTQ advocacy, often intersecting with media regulation and corporate responsibility.
Prior to academia, they worked in finance at State Street Corporation, managing social listening programs that earned a Gold Quill Award. They also led public affairs at the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation and founded No Gay Left Behind, advocating for virtual LGBTQ support via social media.
Research has been presented at ICA, AEJMC, and ETHICOMP conferences, with publications in Journalism Practice, Journal of Telecommunications Policy, and UC Irvine Law Review. Media features include New York Times, Financial Times, and MIT Tech Review.
Awards include the IABC Gold Quill Merit Award and Womma’s Gold Wommy. Their work influences policy debates on social media governance, content moderation, and police media strategies.
