Professor Jennifer Coates holds a faculty position at the School of East Asian Studies within the School of Languages, Arts and Societies at the University of Sheffield. Her academic focus lies at the intersection of Japanese Studies, Film Studies, History, and Anthropology. She has held prior roles including Assistant Professor at Kyoto University and Senior Lecturer at the University of East Anglia.
Her qualifications include MA degrees from the University of Glasgow and SOAS, University of London, followed by a PhD from SOAS. Her research explores Japanese and East Asian cinema, gender studies, ethnographic methods, and cultural transmission. Notable works include Making Icons: Repetition and the Female Image in Japanese Cinema (2016) and Film Viewing in Postwar Japan (2022).
Professor Coates’ current projects include a Philip Leverhulme Prize-funded study on Japanese cultural perception abroad and an AHRC Innovation Scholars collaboration with architects on 'Japan' in built environments. She has been honored with the AHRC Innovation Scholar title and the 2021 Philip Leverhulme Prize.
Her articles span postwar cinema ethnography, gender representation, and cultural memory, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach. Teaching activities are currently on leave until 2025.
