Jennifer Burton is a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD in English and American Literature from Harvard University and leads Five Sisters Productions, an independent film company.
Her research focuses on Women’s History, African American History, and the intersection of arts with civic engagement and hope. Notable films include Origin of the Species (exploring robotics ethics) and Kings, Queens, & In-Betweens (on gender identity). She co-edited Call and Response: Key Debates in African American Studies with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
Burton has produced impactful projects like the Half the History series, documenting underrepresented women in U.S. history, and Old Guy, addressing ageism. She has received grants from the LEF Foundation and the Marion & Jasper Whiting Foundation, among others.
Her teaching emphasizes producing, directing, and interdisciplinary storytelling. Recent courses include Producing for Film and Special Topics: Half the History. Professional activities include organizing film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops on funding and audience engagement.
