Jennifer Burke Reifman

Jennifer Burke Reifman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies at San Diego State University (SDSU), with an appointment in the College of Arts and Letters. She is also the future director of lower-division writing. Her work focuses on equity in writing assessment, student agency, and postsecondary writing programs, employing participant-centered methodologies. She holds a Ph.D. in Education with a Designated Emphasis in Writing, Rhetoric, and Composition Studies from UC Davis (2024), an M.A. in English Composition from San Francisco State University (2013), and a B.A. in Journalism/Anthropology from SUNY Purchase (2008).

Dr. Reifman’s research explores issues such as student experiences in writing programs, raciolinguistic ideologies in self-placement practices, and the impact of state-mandated acceleration policies on community colleges. She has published in prestigious journals like College Composition and Communication, Assessing Writing, and Journal of Basic Writing, and has presented at international conferences including the Writing Research Across Borders Conference and the American Educational Research Association Conference. Her articles often address themes like equitable pedagogical practices, agency in assessment, and feminist coalition-building.

• Leadership Roles: Co-Managing Editor of Xchanges journal, a platform for undergraduate and graduate research; leader in the Global Society of Online Literacy Education (GSOLE).
• Professional Experience: Over 13 years of teaching experience in California’s CSU and community college systems, emphasizing accessible and equitable teaching practices.

Her work prioritizes marginalized student voices and challenges systemic inequities in higher education, particularly through collaborative, equity-centered assessment frameworks. Current projects include constructivist writing placement models and studies on temporal challenges in community college education.
