Jennifer Ahern Dodson serves as an Associate Professor of the Practice in Duke University's Thompson Writing Program within Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She has held this position since 2021 and also serves as Director of the Thompson Writing Program Faculty Write Program since 2023.
Her research focuses on academic writers and the contexts in which they work, with particular expertise in faculty writing development and community-engaged scholarship. She leads faculty learning communities exploring pedagogical innovations in writing and undergraduate research.
Dr. Ahern Dodson founded the Faculty Write Program in 2012, a faculty writing initiative designed to support and empower faculty writers across their roles, responsibilities, and career phases. For fifteen years, she has facilitated scholarly writing retreats, teaching workshops, community-engaged scholar conversations, peer mentor networks, and small group coaching at Duke and other universities for graduate students and faculty.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on faculty writing support systems, with articles examining relationship-oriented writing networks, sustaining momentum after writing retreats, and incorporating reader feedback early in the writing process. These works reflect her commitment to practical, community-based approaches to academic writing development.
She has established herself as a leader in developing sustainable writing practices for academics, with particular attention to creating supportive environments that acknowledge the complex demands of faculty roles.
