Dr. Jen Baggs is a Professor at the University of Victoria's Gustavson School of Business with a cross-appointment in the Department of Economics. She holds a PhD in Commerce from the University of British Columbia, complemented by prior degrees from the University of Alberta and UBC. Her research focuses on international trade dynamics, firm responses to exchange rate fluctuations, and the socio-economic integration of immigrants in Canada. She collaborates with Statistics Canada and has received major awards including the Robert Mundell Prize and Young Economists' Award.
Her work explores how free trade agreements and currency movements affect business viability and financial strategies, with recent emphasis on intersectional factors impacting immigrant labor outcomes through gender/race/mother tongue interactions. She has secured over $150,000 in SSHRC and Industry Canada grants, often leading interdisciplinary teams studying retail sector vulnerability and productivity growth.
Teaching focuses on international business strategy, econometrics, and managerial economics at both undergraduate and MBA levels. Her research bridges theoretical models with empirical analysis, providing actionable insights for firms navigating globalized markets and policy changes.
