Jelani Jefferson Exum is the Dean and Rose DiMartino and Karen Sue Smith Professor of Law at St. John’s University School of Law. She previously served as Dean and Philip J. McElroy Professor of Law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Prior roles include Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Toledo College of Law and professorships at the University of Kansas School of Law. She has also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Law School and as a fellow at Tulane Law School.
Education: A.B. from Harvard College (magna cum laude), J.D. from Harvard Law School. Clerkships included Hon. Eldon E. Fallon (U.S. District Court) and Hon. James L. Dennis (U.S. Court of Appeals).
Research focuses on comparative criminal law, policing, and the intersection of race and criminal justice. She has authored works in academic publications and served on the editorial board of the Federal Sentencing Reporter and chaired the advisory board of the Neighborhood Defender Service of Detroit.
Awards include the Professor of the Year honor from Detroit Mercy students. Professional contributions include teaching courses such as Constitutional Law, Criminal Sentencing, and Race and American Law.
