Jeji Varghese is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the College of Social & Applied Human Sciences. Her work bridges environmental sociology, natural resource governance, and community-engaged scholarship. She holds a PhD in Rural Sociology from the University of Alberta (2005), with dissertation research on forest-dependent communities' social dynamics.
Research Interests: Her four core research themes include sustainability of resource-dependent communities, marginalized groups' participation in resource management, science-policy interfaces, and scholarship of teaching and learning. She emphasizes Indigenous and Western science knowledge integration, equity in socio-ecological governance, and community-based qualitative methodologies.
Teaching: Offers courses on environmental sociology, Indigenous-settler relations in resource governance, and community-engaged research. Courses often include community-engaged learning (CEL) components.
Previous Roles: Prior to her current position, she researched water governance with the Guelph Water Management Group in Geography. Active in faculty development, she co-designed the peer-driven EnLITE program for teaching excellence.
Grants & Collaborations: Engages in multi-stakeholder projects on resilience frameworks and Indigenous knowledge systems. Collaborates with institutions like the Guelph Water Management Group and community partners on applied research initiatives.
