Jeffrey Zalar is an Associate Professor of History and the Ruth J. and Robert A. Conway Endowed Chair of Catholic Studies at the University of Cincinnati (tenured 2018). His academic career includes roles at Pepperdine University, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Georgetown University. His research focuses on religion and intellectual culture in German-speaking Europe (1770-1914), with specializations in Catholicism, book culture, and nationalism.

Research Interests: Dr. Zalar explores how Catholic intellectual communities navigated modernity, focusing on reading practices, science-religion interactions, and confessional identity. His recent work examines Catholics' engagement with natural science (1830-1914) and the role of print culture in shaping religious belief. His books include Reading and Rebellion in Catholic Germany, 1770-1914 (2019) and co-edited Handbook of Religious Culture in Nineteenth-Century Europe (2025).
