Jeffrey Wickliffe

Jeffrey Wickliffe is a Professor and Chair of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health. He holds multiple senior appointments across UAB's research centers, including the Sparkman Center for Global Health, Lung Health Center, and the Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC). His academic career includes a PhD in Biology from Texas Tech University (2002), an MS in Environmental Toxicology from Texas A&M (1997), and a BS in Wildlife Science from Texas A&M (1991). He completed postdoctoral training in toxicology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (2002-2004).

Dr. Wickliffe's research focuses on environmental exposure assessment and its impacts on human health, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and Indigenous communities. His work emphasizes heavy metal toxicity (mercury, lead, arsenic), pesticide exposure, and the intersection of chemical and psychosocial stressors. He leads large-scale cohort studies like the Caribbean Consortium for Research in Environmental and Occupational Health (CCREOH) in Suriname, examining environmental determinants of birth outcomes and neurodevelopmental health.

His grants include funding from NIH's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Academies Gulf Research Program. Notable publications explore wearable technology for heat stress monitoring, mercury contamination in Suriname's aquatic ecosystems, and disparities in environmental exposures among sexual and gender minority populations. His work bridges laboratory toxicology with population-level epidemiology, advocating for policy-driven interventions to reduce environmental health inequities.

Dr. Wickliffe collaborates across disciplines, integrating clinical, environmental, and social data to address complex health challenges. He participates in interdisciplinary teams at UAB and globally, advancing methods for exposure measurement and advancing health equity in resource-limited settings.
