Jeffrey W. Paller is an Associate Professor of Politics at the University of San Francisco and a Researcher in the Department of Government at Uppsala University. He maintains affiliations as a Research Associate at the Governance and Local Development Institute (University of Gothenburg) and previously held a fellowship at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (2022-23).
His educational background includes a PhD in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BA from Northwestern University. Prior academic roles encompass a Visiting Lecturer position at Bates College (2014-15) and postdoctoral research at Columbia University's Earth Institute (2016).
Paller's research critically examines the intersection of African urbanization and democratic governance through ethnographic and survey methodologies. His work reveals how marginalized communities navigate political participation in rapidly growing cities, with particular emphasis on:
- Contentious politics of urbanization
- Sustainable neighborhood development
- Local governance in emerging African cities
- Everyday political practices in informal settlements
Recent publications demonstrate a cohesive focus on urban political dynamics across Africa and the Global South, integrating theoretical frameworks like recognition theory with empirical studies of housing, elections, and service delivery. This body of work consistently bridges comparative politics, urban studies, and development scholarship.
His notable distinctions include:
- Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study Fellowship (2022-23)
- Earth Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia University (2016)
Paller currently directs major research initiatives including the FORMAS-funded "Building Sustainable Neighborhoods in African Cities" (2024-26) as Principal Investigator, and co-leads the Swedish Research Council's "Emerging Cities" research environment (2023-27). He additionally serves as Co-Investigator on the Research Council of Norway's "Political Transformation in African Cities" project (2020-25), while curating the influential "This Week in Africa" news bulletin that synthesizes continental developments for academic and policy audiences.
His collaborative research network spans Uppsala University, University of Gothenburg, and Columbia University, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to urban governance challenges through the Governance and Local Development Institute and Center for Sustainable Urban Development partnerships.
