Jeffrey Spitler

Jeffrey Spitler is a Regents Professor and OG&E Energy Technology Chair in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He leads research in building energy systems, ground-source heat pumps, and thermal energy storage. His affiliations include the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) and collaborations with institutions in Sweden, China, and the U.S.

Education: Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1983–1990). Professional registrations include a Licensed Professional Engineer in Oklahoma and roles as Honorary Professor at North China University of Technology and Adjunct Professor at Hunan University.

Research focuses on improving building thermal efficiency through advanced simulation tools, ground heat exchanger design, and renewable energy integration. Key contributions include the Radiant Time Series Method and Residential Load Factor Method for HVAC load calculations. His work addresses challenges in geothermal systems, energy storage, and reducing building energy consumption.

Awards include the 2023 Peter Ritter von Rittenger Award, 2019 ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award, and multiple ASHRAE Technical Paper Awards. He has been honored with the E.K. Campbell Award and induction into the ASHRAE Hall of Fame.

His research lab at OSU develops innovative thermal systems and collaborates on projects like the TriCoil three-fluid heat exchanger and long-term GSHP system monitoring. He has advised numerous studies on geothermal applications and energy policy, with over 200 publications in top journals like Renewable Energy and Energies.
