Jeffrey Shallit is a Professor at the Cheriton School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo. In 2020, he was elected as a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, recognizing his status as a leading academic in theoretical computer science and mathematics. He joined Waterloo in 1990 as an assistant professor after completing his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, under Manuel Blum (Turing Award recipient) and group theorist David Goldschmidt.
Research Interests: His work sits at the intersection of number theory, algebra, logic, discrete mathematics, and computational theory. He is particularly renowned for his research in combinatorics on words and automata theory, focusing on decision procedures.
