معرفی
Dr. Jeffrey S. Diamond serves as Scientific Director and Senior Investigator at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He leads the NINDS Intramural Research Program and directs the Synaptic Physiology Section within the Division of Intramural Research.
His educational trajectory includes:
- B.S. from Duke University (1989)
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience from University of California, San Francisco (1994), researching retinal synaptic transmission with David Copenhagen
- Postdoctoral fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University's Vollum Institute under Craig Jahr
Dr. Diamond's research centers on neural information processing mechanisms in the mammalian retina, specifically examining how biophysical and morphological properties of synapses, neurons, and microcircuits enable visual computations. His work leverages the retina's experimental advantages – including precise stimulus control, multi-cell recording capabilities, and well-mapped circuitry – to dissect fundamental principles of synaptic transmission, neural encoding, and circuit function. Key focus areas include ion channel dynamics, neurotransmitter receptor properties, and glutamate transporter regulation.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (2000)
As Scientific Director, Dr. Diamond manages the NINDS IRP's research portfolio, resource allocation, and scientific mentoring framework. His laboratory maintains active investigation of synaptic physiology in retinal circuits, continuing research initiated when he joined NINDS in 1999 and was promoted to Senior Investigator in 2007. The Synaptic Physiology Section remains central to understanding neural computation principles with implications for broader neuroscience.
