Jeffrey Murer

Jeffrey Murer is a Senior Lecturer in Collective Violence at the School of International Relations, University of St Andrews. He serves as Deputy Head of School and is affiliated with multiple research centers, including the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence. His work intersects sociology, politics, and psychoanalysis to examine identity formation through violence and political conflict.

Research focuses on collective violence, political psychology, and identity dynamics in post-communist Europe, the Balkans, and immigrant communities in the UK. His recent publications analyze symbolic violence against Romani women and border theories in multimodal art.

Scientific awards include the Annual Graduate Dissertation Prize (University of Illinois at Chicago, 2000), Founding Scholar of the British Psychoanalytic Council (2016), and Fellowships at Cambridge and Paris VII. He has supervised 13 advisees and led projects funded by the British Council and Carnegie Trust.
