Jeffrey L. Hutter

Jeffrey L. Hutter is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Western Ontario and serves as the Associate Dean (Academic) for the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on soft condensed-matter physics, nanomaterials, and advanced AFM techniques, bridging experimental physics and applied materials science.

Research Interests include:

• Soft materials like hydrogels and their applications in biomaterials
• Nanoscale mechanical properties of materials (carbon nanotubes, bacterial cellulose)
• AFM calibration methods and imaging artifacts
• Crystallization kinetics of alkanes and biomineralization processes

Collaborations extend to Biomedical Engineering and the Robarts Research Institute, where he explores cellular adhesion and mechanical properties. His lab employs techniques such as optical microscopy, atomic-force microscopy, neutron scattering, and digital image processing.

Lab Opportunities: He occasionally supervises graduate students in Physics and Biomedical Engineering and offers senior honors research thesis (Physics 4999E) and summer undergraduate research positions.
