Jeffrey L. Firkins is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University (OSU), part of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). He holds a BS (1981), MS (1983), and PhD (1987) in Animal Science and Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Illinois, followed by postdoctoral research there. His research focuses on dairy cattle nutrition, rumen microbiology, and improving protein/carbohydrate digestion efficiency to reduce methane emissions. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles and advised 29 graduate students.
Professional roles include co-chairing international conferences, serving on the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle committee, and editorial roles. Awards include CFAES Distinguished Professor (2023–2024), ADSA Fellow (2020), and multiple grants totaling $4M. He teaches nutrition courses and has held leadership roles in the American Dairy Science Association.
Firkins' work integrates microbiology and nutrition to address dairy industry challenges. His lab explores rumen ciliate protozoa, microbial protein synthesis, and fiber/starch degradation. He collaborates on projects like Burk Dehority's rumen microbiology legacy and antibiotic effects on rumen ecology. His research emphasizes practical applications for sustainable dairy production.
