Jeffrey D. Niemann is the Faoro Professor of Water Resources in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University. He holds a B.S. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT. His research focuses on hydrology, geomorphology, soil moisture dynamics, flood forecasting, and international water and sanitation development. He coordinates the Hydrologic Science and Engineering and Water and International Development (WAID) programs and teaches courses such as Basic Hydrology and Watershed Modeling.
- Education: B.S. (1993, University of Colorado), M.S. (1997, MIT), Ph.D. (2001, MIT)
- Affiliations: Colorado State University, Borland Chair of Hydrology
Research interests include modeling soil moisture patterns, flood hydrology, climate change impacts, and remote sensing applications. His work spans international development projects in El Salvador, Belize, Burundi, Ethiopia, and others, emphasizing sustainable water systems. He has been recognized with prestigious awards like the Presidential Early Career Award (2002) and the George T. Abell Award (2011).
His advising includes numerous M.S. and Ph.D. students focusing on topics like soil moisture downscaling, flood modeling, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) projects. He contributes to grants exploring groundwater depletion, wildfire impacts, and hydrologic uncertainty quantification. His lab, the Landscape Hydrology Group, collaborates on projects such as dynamic soil moisture mapping and flood inundation modeling.
