Jeffrey Capadona

Jeffrey Capadona is the Vice Provost for Innovation and Donnell Institute Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. He holds roles in the Case School of Engineering and the School of Medicine, and leads the Capadona Lab as a Senior Research Career Scientist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His research focuses on bio-inspired materials to mitigate neuroinflammatory responses in neural interfaces, with a track record of groundbreaking work in biomaterials for intracortical microelectrodes, including landmark publications in Science and Nature Nanotechnology.

Dr. Capadona’s administrative leadership includes reducing PhD program completion times by a full academic year as Associate Chair for Graduate Education, launching the Faculty Research Incentive Plan, and chairing the Future of Learning Committee. He spearheaded the AI Task Force’s roadmap to integrate AI ethically into education. His lab investigates neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and microbiome impacts on neural implants, with innovations in mechanically adaptive materials and drug-delivery systems.

Research Interests: Biomaterials engineering, neuroinflammation mitigation, neural interface design, and translational strategies for clinical applications. His work bridges materials science and clinical neuroengineering to improve neural implant longevity and performance.

Awards: 2011 PECASE from President Obama for pioneering biocompatible neural implants. His lab’s patents include dynamic mechanical polymer nanocomposites for biomedical applications.
