Jeffrey Bortz is a Professor in the Department of History at Appalachian State University, where he has taught since 1989 after earning his PhD in Latin American history from UCLA. He previously held teaching positions at Mexico's Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
His research specializes in Mexican labor history, with significant contributions to understanding 20th century wage dynamics, cotton textile workers' experiences during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1923), and contemporary studies of railroad workers. His work consistently examines intersections of poverty, resistance, and revolutionary social change through empirical historical analysis.
Professor Bortz has received major recognition including a Guggenheim Fellowship and Appalachian State University's Excellence in Teaching Award. His research has been funded by the Fulbright Program, Social Science Research Council, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
He has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students at ASU, with many advancing to doctoral programs at institutions including UC San Diego, UC Irvine, University of Texas at Austin, Rutgers, and Oxford. His public scholarship includes newspaper articles for audiences in both the United States and Mexico.
