Dr. Jeffrey Bell serves as Professor in the Department of Biology and Assistant Dean for the College of Natural Sciences at California State University, Chico, where he oversees scheduling, student success initiatives, and budgeting for the college.
He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California (USC), establishing his expertise in genetic and ecological research domains.
His research centers on Northern California native animal population biology and the functional role of the MSX2 homeobox gene in vertebrate development, bridging molecular genetics with ecological conservation studies. This work demonstrates significant contributions to understanding evolutionary developmental mechanisms in native species.
Beyond research, Dr. Bell co-authored the Biolabs online simulations and founded the Merlot Biology Editorial Board, demonstrating commitment to educational innovation. As former six-year Biology Department Chair and current Institutional Faculty Fellow, he actively drives the Chico Graduation Initiative 2025 through data-driven projects with Institutional Research.
