Jeffrey A. Klemens is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Thomas Jefferson University's College of Life Sciences. His research program integrates tropical forest restoration, conservation biology, and technological innovation, with field sites spanning Costa Rica's Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) and urban Pennsylvania. He co-founded IACG to bridge scientific research and conservation management and leads the Sustainability in Motion project developing animated science education modules.
Education:
- NSF Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Minnesota (2006)
- PhD in Biology, University of Pennsylvania (2003)
- BS in Biology, Illinois Wesleyan University (1998)
His research focuses on:
- Tropical forest restoration ecology and long-term conservation strategies
- Agent-based modeling of animal movement in fragmented landscapes
- Development of low-cost wildlife monitoring tools (e.g., Raspberry Pi camera traps)
- Science communication frameworks for non-academic stakeholders
- Models-based pedagogy to enhance biology education
Publications emphasize science education reform, conservation technology, and tropical ecosystem management, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches linking ecology, technology, and pedagogy.
Awards:
- NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship
Klemens coordinates cross-disciplinary initiatives including the Sustainability in Motion project (animation-based science education) and maintains field research operations in Costa Rica through IACG.
