Jeffrey A Newman is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on galaxy evolution and dark energy using large observational datasets, including leadership roles in the DESI, Rubin Observatory, and LSST collaborations.
Key research interests include cosmological surveys, photometric redshifts, and statistical analysis of galaxy distributions. He has contributed to projects like DEEP2, CANDELS, and AEGIS, and currently leads efforts in LSST photometric redshift calibration and DESI spectroscopic surveys.
His work has been supported by DOE and NSF grants. Notable achievements include the DOE Early Career Award (2010) and over 50+ peer-reviewed publications. He advises graduate students and postdocs, with notable advisees including Rongpu Zhou and Biprateep Dey.
Collaborations include leading DESI's Photometric Redshifts Working Group and Rubin Observatory's External Synergies team. His research bridges observational astronomy with theoretical cosmology to explore cosmic acceleration and dark energy.
