Jeff Strabone

Jeff Strabone is an Associate Professor of English at Connecticut College, where he has taught since 2010 and serves as Media, Rhetoric, and Communication Pathway Coordinator. He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College, an M.A. from Northwestern University, and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from New York University.

His research centers on British eighteenth-century and Romantic-era literature with a focus on cultural nationalisms across England, Scotland, and Wales, media theory, and intersections of race, nation, and empire. Strabone employs an Archipelagic approach to examine how poets and antiquarians repurposed medieval texts to construct cultural national identities, particularly through his acclaimed book Poetry and British Nationalisms in the Bardic Eighteenth Century: Imagined Antiquities.

His scholarly work reveals consistent engagement with transnational literary networks, manuscript circulation practices, and the political dimensions of media ecologies. Strabone's publications span journals like ELH and Eighteenth-Century Life, with recurring themes in Romantic medievalism, postcolonial critiques of empire, and the material history of texts.

As an active member of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and British Association for Romantic Studies, he co-organized international conferences on Historical Poetics (2019, 2021) and was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (2011).

Beyond academia, Strabone co-founded New Brooklyn Theatre (2012-2021), where his site-specific production of The Death of Bessie Smith helped save a Brooklyn hospital from closure, demonstrating his commitment to community-engaged artistic practice.
