Dr. Jeff Martin is an Assistant Professor of Bison Biology and Management in the Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University (SDSU), and serves as an Extension Bison Specialist at the SDSU West River Research and Extension Center in Rapid City. His interdisciplinary research focuses on bison biology, climate change impacts, and stakeholder engagement to improve wildlife conservation across private, public, tribal, and NGO sectors. He holds a Ph.D. in Wildlife Sciences from Texas A&M University (2020), an M.S. in Geosciences (Vertebrate Paleontology) from East Tennessee State (2014), and a B.S. in Geology (2012).
Dr. Martin’s work explores the physiological and ecological responses of bison to climate change, including body size changes, thermoregulation, and translocation strategies. His research integrates paleobiology, climatology, and human dimensions to address conservation challenges. Key themes include bison management system vulnerabilities, food sovereignty, and grassland sustainability. He leads the Martin Lab, which emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to bison adaptability and plasticity.
